Introduction & Chapter 1: How to Be an Inclusive Leader, by Jennifer Brown

Book Cover: How to be an Inclusive Leader

FREE Inclusive Leader Assessment: https://jenniferbrownspeaks.com/jbs-self-assessments

About the Inclusive Leader Assessment: based on Jennifer Brown’s Inclusive Leader Continuum™ and what we call the four stages of the Inclusive Leader journey: Aware, Unaware, Active, and Advocate. We believe the categories and statements comprising the Assessment effectively capture the traits and behaviors of inclusive leadership, and will help you locate yourself among the four stages.

Although the four stages suggest a linear progression, it’s important to think of the Inclusive Leader journey as a Continuum – circular versus linear. Sometimes we will leap forward in our learning and have great success, and other times we will have to step back and regroup and recognize how little we know. In today’s rapidly changing world, there will always be more to learn and language and context will continue to evolve.

We designed the Assessment to spark growth and learning, but as importantly, to create moments for reflection. The journey to become more inclusive is a very personal one. Each of us is shaped by our unique identities and experiences and will be starting out from a different place with different perspectives. As you move through the Assessment, take the time to carefully consider each statement. Just reflecting thoughtfully about your responses may create new awareness and move you forward on your learning journey.

Upon completion of the Inclusive Leader Assessment, you will receive a report indicating where you currently appear in the Continuum and offering suggestions and resources to advance your learning. We all reside somewhere in the four stages when it comes to our general mindset and daily actions, and there are no judgments about where you find yourself today. The important thing is that you’ve embarked on the journey to become a more inclusive leader.
